The Trump administration’s policies are abandoning millions of Americans to uncertain futures

Throughout the course of what became the longest federal government shutdown in U.S. history, one thing remained clear and constant: The Trump administration is abandoning the American people. The Trump administration turned its back on hungry families, on farmers, on federal workers, on states and cities, and more—all of whom suffered because of the administration’s failures of leadership. This administration:
Refuses to extend the Affordable Care Act’s enhanced premium tax credits, which will lead to higher health insurance premiums and acutely harm the most at-risk Americans.
Is failing to provide American leadership on critical global issues like climate change, consigning our country and our allies to a less secure environmental future.
Is enacting chaotic trade policies that risk driving many farmers to bankruptcy.
It is critical both to hold this administration accountable for its failures and also to continue to fight for policy solutions that will lead to better outcomes for the American people.
CAP’s Emily Gee is ready for that fight. Her latest work highlights that Congress still has the opportunity to do right by millions of Americans whose health care costs will spike in 2026.
And a new report from CAP’s Ryan Mulholland and Mark Haggerty shows how Trump’s latest deal with China does little to solve the long-term challenges facing American farmers.
Trump’s attacks on food assistance are nothing new

While the government shutdown may have ended, and SNAP benefits will soon be restored, the Trump administration spent weeks doing everything in its power to avoid fulfilling its legal obligation to send this essential food assistance out to hungry families in the midst of the holiday season. This is only the latest way the Trump administration has forced families to go hungry.
Since taking office in January, the Trump administration has abandoned Americans by:
Cutting grants for food banks and school meals
Incinerating 500 tons of emergency food meant for children
Passing the largest SNAP cuts in history—nearly $187 billion—in the Big Beautiful Bill
Imposing tariffs that have increased food prices
Preventing states from being reimbursed for covering the cost of SNAP benefits
Concealing the harms of cuts to food assistance programs
